Story Behind the Series I love both "chase the clues" stories and "race for your life" thrillersand I was determined to pull together a story that not only had those elements, but was also solidly women's fiction. The series started with a simple scene: a girl receiving a coded message, which, when decoded told her she had to play or die. But play what? And who was her tormentor. My first inclination was to have the overarching nemesis be an elderly manfull of wealth and powerwho fancied himself in love withand spurned bymy heroine. The problem with that? For one thing, it seemed trite. For another, I envisioned a trilogy, even though I had no story yet. But as I thoughtand surfed the net in procrastinationeventually I realized what had been bubbling in the back of my mind all along: The girls (andyes!I was right; there were three of them) were being tormented by a madman who'd brought a computer game to life in the real world. Working out the details of the gamenot to mention the clues in the individual booksrequired some serious concentration. But I think it was worth it. As for the fashion component, I knew I wanted smart, strong women in an urban setting. The girls, by their nature, had their favs in fashionthus giving birth to not only three heroines, but also three great titles, too! |
